Em 8 de janeiro de 2023, o governo recém-empossado de Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva enfrentou uma tentativa de golpe de Estado. Foi o ataque mais significativo ataque à democracia brasileira, desde o golpe de 1964. Para além de seu papel nas investigações criiminais em curso, as imagens da tentativa de golpe em 8 de janeiro, divulgadas pelo Gabinete de Segurança Institucional à imprensa, por determinação do Supremo Tribunal Federal, são emblemáticas de algumas peculiaridades da cultura de memória na atualidade.
Entre essas peculiaridades, destaca-se a superprodução de registros que são criados para serem esquecidos, como os produzidos para as redes sociais, ou para serem apagados, como os vídeos gerados por câmeras de segurança, nosso foco aqui. Nesse contexto, essas imagens sugerem questões importantes que estamos abordando por meio de um conjunto de operações investigativas:

On January 8, 2023, the newly inaugurated government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva experienced an attempted coup d’état. It was the most significant assault on democracy since the coup of 1964, which resulted in a dictatorship that remained in power until 1985. The images of the coup attempts on January 8th, released by the Institutional Security Cabinet to the press, by determination of the Federal Supreme Court, are emblematic of some peculiarities of memory culture nowadays. Among them, the overproduction of records stands out, which are created to be forgotten, such as those produced for social media, or to be deleted, like the videos generated by security cameras, our focus here. However, in the context of the Brazilian January 8th, these records have gained the status of documents and criminal evidence. After all, these images, produced not to be seen or retained, constitute the only official documentation of the event. Beyond their instrumental role in the ongoing process concerning the attempted coup orchestrated by the Bolsonaro far-right, these images suggest important questions that we are addressing through a set of operations:
